These days it seems like there is a new social network cropping up on an almost weekly basis. The problem is, not all of these platforms make sense for your business. In fact, it’s strongly recommended that business owners pick just a few networks to establish an active presence on. So…which ones should you choose?

As a busy professional, it’s challenging enough just to find the time to devote to your social media marketing, never mind trying to figure out where you should be focusing that time. Thankfully there are a few tricks to help you narrow down your options and quickly make the right decision. Here’s what you need to do.

First, identify your audience.
You won’t get results from SMM if you are barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. Before you invest even a moment of your precious time into social media, you have to figure out who you are trying to reach. This information will help you determine which social networks your target audience is most likely to spend their time and therefore where you should be focusing your efforts.

Next, develop your goals.
Different social platforms deliver different types of results. For instance, Pinterest is more about generating engagement while Facebook is more about fostering relationships. Likewise, Twitter is a great tool for quickly expanding your reach while LinkedIn is important for making professional connections. Determine exactly what it is you’d like to accomplish with your social media marketing campaigns. This will help you find the platform(s) that most closely align with your objectives.

Decide on your level of commitment.
Each social platform is unique in terms of how frequently users should be posting. For instance, some networks require multiple posts per day in order to garner the most engagement. Others you may get away with updating just a few times a week. Take an honest look at your schedule and figure out how much time you are willing and able to commit to SMM. Finally, be patient but agile.
It’s important to note that generating results from social media marketing activities isn’t something that happens overnight.
